A New Type Of Music

Known for their experimental approach to rock music, Deftones is a California-based band that was formed in 1988. Originally, their line-up consisted of Chino Moreno (lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist), Stephen Carpenter (lead guitarist), Abe Cunningham (drummer), and Dominic Garcia (bassist). However, the members of the group have changed on multiple occasions, other notable contributors being Frank Delgado (keyboardist and turntablist), Chi Cheng (bassist and backing vocalist), John Taylor (drummer), and Sergio Vega (bassist and backing vocalist).

The musical style adopted by the band is said to draw inspiration from several genres, evolving over multiple years to coincide with the non-stagnant nature of Deftones. During their formative years, the press often regarded them as proponents of the ‘nu metal’ movement. Nevertheless, Moreno expressed his dislike of the categorisation, and critics started to recognise their dissimilarities following the debut of later albums.

After being signed with the record label Maverick Records, the band released their first album, Adrenaline (1995). This was followed by a number of critically acclaimed successors: Around The Fur (1997), White Pony (2000), Deftones (2003), Saturday Night Wrist (2006), Diamond Eyes (2010), Koi No Yokan (2012), Gore (2016), and Ohms (2020). Several of these have been certified platinum in the US, and ‘Change (In The House Of Flies)’ — the first single from White Pony — is recognised as the group’s most commercially successful song. Additionally, ‘Elite’ (another track from their third album) received a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
