The Wicked Fairy Godmother

Maleficent is a character based on the wicked fairy godmother, who was first seen in Charles Perrault’s classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty. The character also appears in Walt Disney’s 1959 animated feature film of the same name.

Self-proclaimed the ‘Mistress Of Evil’, Maleficent is the principal antagonist of Disney’s enchanting tale and has a massive arsenal of magical powers at her command. When she was not invited to Princess Aurora’s christening, she cursed the child to ‘prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die’ before the sun sets on Aurora’s sixteenth birthday.

In 2014, Disney released a live-action adaptation of the popular film: Maleficent. This film reimagined the story from the perspective of the eponymous character (played by Angelina Jolie), depicting her difficult relationship with Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) and King Stefan (Sharlto Copley). Unlike previous interpretations of the character, the movie presents Maleficent as a sympathetic and largely misunderstood individual, who simply wishes to protect her territory, known as the Moors, from the humans.

Due to the immense success of the first film, Disney released a sequel in 2019. Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil sees the character attend Aurora and Prince Phillip’s (Harris Dickinson) marriage. However, she clashes with Phillip’s mother, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer), who has a cunning plan to destroy all the land’s fairies.
